Infrared Light (IR) is the light found just past what is visible to the human eye. Near-Infrared Light (NIR) is the section of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) wavelengths nearest to the normal range but just past what we can see.
Visible light is the smallest section of the electromagnetic (EM) radiation field. We are surrounded by electromagnetic energy every day through our radios, televisions, microwave ovens, sunshine, X-rays, and for some, gamma rays. This infrared spectrum is then divided again into near, mid, and far. The technology in a StoneLock GO biometric reader uses a near-infrared camera to authenticate users within an integrated access control system.

Near-Infrared Light vs. Far-Infrared Light
The farther away a wavelength gets from visible light, the longer the wavelength becomes and the closer it gets to the microwave range. You can’t see or feel near-infrared light. Far-Infrared light, however, is thermal, and although we can’t see it, we can feel it through the sun, a campfire, your radiator, or the hot summer pavement.
Is Infrared Light Safe?
Infrared light is safe! Infrared and more specifically, near-infrared are safe for the eyes and the body. Both near-infrared technology and Far-Infrared technology are said to have health benefits and can be found in saunas and other red light therapy devices.
How Do Near-Infrared Cameras Work?
The Near-Infrared camera found in The StoneLock GO uses short-wavelength Infrared Light to flood the user’s face. The energy then bounces back to the camera. When the reflected light hits the camera lens, StoneLock’s patented software analyses the information to create an individual “key.” The StoneLock GO reader will then authenticate the user. After the authentication, the data is sent to the access control panel to be authorized. If accepted, the user will gain access to their assigned secure areas.
